EntrepreneurialStart-UpandGrowth:ACaseStudyofThailandAlinaZapalskaMarshallUniversityGeoffPerryAucklandInstituteofTechnology1ThepurposeofthisstudyistoevaluatethestagesBofdevelopmentprocessandthegrowthpatternsofentrepreneurialventuresoftheThaieconomy.Thefour-stagegrowthmodeldevelopedbyKazanjian(1988)wasusedtodeterminethestageofgrowthofeachfirm.Stagesconsistoforganizationaldesignvariablesrepresentinghowfirmsrespondtothedominantproblemstheyface.Therelationshipsbetweenstagesofgrowthanddominantproblemsarepresentedusingadatabaseof169Thaientrepreneurialfirms.Inthesummerof1998,theauthorsconductedasurveytodeterminethetypesofsmallandmedium(SME)sizedfirmsbeingformedinThailandandthebackgroundofthefirms=founders.ThestudywasdesignedtoevaluatethestagesBof-developmentprocessandthegrowthpatternsofSMEentrepreneurialventuresoftheThaieconomy.Thefour-stagegrowthmodelutilisedinthisstudydescribescombinationsoforganizationaldesignvariablesrepresentinghowafirmrespondstothedominantproblemsthateachfaces.Thepapershowsthatspecificbarrierstoafirm=sdevelopmentareinfluencedbyitsstageofentrepreneurialdevelopmentbutcanariseforavarietyofreasons.ThisstudyhelpsexplainthetypesofproblemsthattheThaifirmsneedtosolveto1TheauthorswouldliketoacknowledgethecontributionofseveralstaffmembersattheUniversityoftheThaiChamberofCommerce(UTCC),Bangkok,thailand,withoutwhichthisresearchcouldnothavebeencompleted.ApiradeeBhatarakarnt(FacultyofBusinessAdministration)wasinvaluableasaresearchadviserinBangkok,asorganiserofthesurveydistributionandcollectionandastranslatorofthequestionnaireintoThaiandtheresponsesfromThaitoEngish,AcharapanLeanhanathavuth(FacultyofBusinessAdministration),YupinPitayavatanachai(FacultyofBusinessAdministration)andRoongrojBenjamasutin(FacultyofEconomics)alsoprovidedimportantsupport.
