TheLife-cycleGrowthandDevelopmentApproachtoAnalyzingEntrepreneurshipinChinaAlinaZapalskaMarshallUniversityGeoffPerryAucklandUniversityofTechnologyIthasbeenlongrecognisedthatacriticalcontributortoeconomicgrowthanddevelopmentinacountryisprivatesectorentrepreneurialactivity(Schumpeter1934,McLelland1961,Kilby1971andKirchhoff1991).Consequently,therehasbeenalargeandgrowingbodyofresearchintothenatureandcharacteristicsofentrepreneursandintothesocial,economicandpoliticalenvironmentsthatpromoteorhinderentrepreneurialactivity.1ThispapercontributestothisliteraturebyanalysingsmallandmediumsizedentrepreneursinChina.Specificallythepaperaddressesthreequestions:firstly,whatarethecharacteristicsofChineseentrepreneurs;secondly,whataretheproblemsfacedbyChineseentrepreneursastheirbusinessventuresdevelopandgrow;andthirdly,whatcompetenciesareimportantfortheseentrepreneurstoremainsuccessfulastheirbusinessesgrow?LiteraturereviewTheanalysisofthedevelopmentandgrowthofChineseentrepreneursinthispaperisbasedontwoaspectsofentrepreneurialresearchCstagesofdevelopmentmodelsandtheoriesoffirmcompetenceCthatareoutlinedbelow.1SeeHornadayandAbound(1971),Gartner(1989a,1989b),GnyawaliandFogel(1994)andZapalska(1997)
