LessonsfromTheLoraxMichaelHammockEmoryUniversityJ.WilsonMixon,Jr.BerryCollegeMichaelF.PatronoBerryCollegeInthelate1960s,TheodoreGeisel(Dr.Seuss)frettedthathehadreadtoomanyAdullthingsonconservation,fullofstatisticsandpreachy.@1Hebeganworkonwhathasbecomeaclassicofchildren=sliteratureandastandardtextforEarthDayceremonies.TheLorax,publishedin1971,receivedimmediateattention.ItsoriginaldrawingsjoinedmoonrocksasfocalpointsattheopeningoftheLyndonB.JohnsonPresidentialLibrary.Sincethatauspiciousbeginning,TheLoraxhassoldaround600,000copies.Moreover,ithasbeenadaptedtovideo.Acartoonversion,completewithcatchytunes,hasAfarexceededexpectations@ofitsdistributor.2Despiteitscontinuingsuccess,nooneteachingabouttheenvironmentshouldusethisbookasatextwithoutsometrepidation.Itdoesraiseimportantquestions,butitsuggestsanswersthat,despitegoodintentions,aremisleading,perhapsdangerouslyso.Thecentraltruthofthiswonderfullywrittenstory,thatnosocietycanprosperbydepletingitsstockofrenewableresources,isundeniable:Thedifficultieswiththestoryaretwofold:Itcontainsinternalcontradictionsanditsprescriptionsdirectattentionawayfromalternativesthatcanactuallyachievethestatedgoals.Thelatterfailureisduetoacommonviewthatpeople,notincentives,mustbechangedifwearetoavoidthefatedepictedinthetale.Beforeaddressingthecontentofeachofourassertionswereviewthestoryandfollowupwithaninterpretationthatcallsinto1QuotedinMorganandMorgan(1995,209).2QuotingScottMartinof20thCenturyFoxVideo,inpersonalcorrespondence.Thedistributor=spolicyprecludesreleasingexactsalesfigures.
