TheIdahoEconomicSummitMarthaC.YoppUniversityofIdahoCenteronEconomicEducationJodyHoffIdahoCouncilonEconomicEducationBackgroundTheIdahoEconomicSummitevolvedfromaprogramwhichoriginatedatBorahHighSchoolinBoise,Idahointheearly1990s.ItprovedtobeverypopularwithstudentsandfacultyandgrewtoincludestudentsinotherBoiseschools.OnApril25,2000,KaliKurdy,theteacherwhodevelopedtheEconomicSummitproject,wasnamedtheFirstGrandWinneroftheNASDAQNationalTeachingAwards,andreceiveda$25,000cashaward.KaliKurdy,oneoffivepreviouslyannouncedRegionalWinners,waschosennumberonebyadistinguishedpanelofjudges.Planning&preparationPreparationofteamstoparticipateintheEconomicSummitisaneighttotenweekactivity.Participatingstudentsmaybeenrolledinaneconomicsclass,abusinessormarketingclass,ortheymaybemembersofastudentorganization.Teamsaremadeupofthreetofivestudents.Eachteamisassignedacountryforwhichtheybecometheeconomicadvisors.Aseconomicadvisors,eachteammustassessthesocial,political,andeconomicconditionswithinthecountryanddetermineacourseofactionwhichwillincreasethestandardoflivingofthepopulation.Theybecomeanexpertonthatcountry,itspeople,itseconomicandpoliticalsystem,thestandard-of-living,andeconomicbase.Theybecomefamiliarwithwhatresourcesthecountryhasandwhatproductsitproducesandwhatproductsandservicesitimportsandexports.Studentsalsoexplorebasiceconomicconceptsrelatedtointernationaltrade.EconomicsummitplanninggridTheEconomicSummitProjectincludes12lessons.Theyare:
