Economics:WritingtoLearnandLearningtoWriteJosephHortonBonnieSeltingRobinGallaherUniversityofCentralArkansasForfouryearswehavepairedonesectionofanintroductoryeconomicsclasswithtwosectionsofarequiredfreshmanwritingcourse.Webelieveoursuccessfulexperiencewillbeusefultootherfacultymemberswhomaywishtotrythisorasimilarinterdisciplinarymethodofteaching.Thepurposeofthispaperistogiveanaccountofhowweintegratedourtwodisciplinestostrengthenstudentlearningofboth.Studentshaveachievedhighergradesthanthoseinothersectionsoftheeconomicscourseandtheinstructorhasreceivedhigherstudentevaluations.Studentgradesandevaluationsarealsohigherinthewritingcoursecomparedtoothersections.Studentcommentsareveryfavorabletothisapproachinbothcourses.WhatisFIGS?FIGSstandsforFreshmanInterestGroups.Theideaistohavestudentswithsimilarinterestsregisterasagroupformorethanonecourse.Theprogramisvoluntary,sotheremaybesomeselfselection.TheobjectiveofFIGS,asgivenbytheUniversity,isAtodevelopanenrichedintellectualandsocialrelationshipforbothfacultyandstudents@(U.S.Impact,p.1).Inadditiontopaperassignments,thewritinginstructorincorporatesalessformalwritingassignment-threadeddiscussionparticipation.Thisforumgivesstudentstheopportunitytowriteaboutissuesrelatedtoeconomicswithoutthepressureofagradeonthequalityoftheeconomiccontentorwriting.Thestudentsreceivedagradebasedsolelyonthenumberofmessagesthattheypost;theyarerequiredtopost15messagestoreceivefullcredit.Studentsthinkthroughwhattheyarelearningandwritingaboutinourtwoclassesontheirowntimeandterms.
