TestsoftheValidityofPerceptionsAboutInteractiveTelevisionCoursesAmongFacultyMembersandStudentsSuzeanneB.BenetGrandValleyStateUniversityNancyM.LevenburgGrandValleyStateUniversityInthe1990'smanyinstitutionshavebegunofferingprogramsandcoursesdeliveredviadistancelearningtechnologies,particularlyforreturningadultlearnerswhoaretime-andlocationbound,desiringtoadvancetheireducationandcareeropportunitiesyetconstrainedbyjobandfamilyresponsibilities.Onepopularformofdistancelearningisinteractivetelevision,atechnologythatconnectstwoormoreclassroomswithtwo-wayaudioandtwo-wayvideo.Manyfacultymembers,however,haveexpressedreluctancetobecomeinvolvedindistanceeducation.Sincetheyareinstrumentalinthiseducationalprocess,astudywasconductedinwhichtheperceptionsoffourdistinctgroupswereexploredregradingvariousaspectsofthedistancelearningexperienceviaITV;studentswhohaveandhavenottakenanITVcourse,andfaculty/administratorswhohaveandhavenottaughtanITVcourse.Theresultsofthisdescriptivestudy,conductedduringtheFall1997semesterataregionaluniversity,indicatethattherearehighlysignificantdifferencesbetweenwhatstudentsthinktheywillexperienceinanITVcourseandthereportfromstudentswhohavetakensuchcourses.Ingeneral,studentsanticipatealesseffectiveclassduetotechnologicallimitations.However,thiswasnottheexperienceofstudentsenrolledinITVcourses.Interestingly,inspiteofthelackofproblemsrelatedtotechnology,bothfacultyandstudentswhohavehadexperiencewithITV-deliveredcoursesstillpreferface-to-facesections.Asexpressedbybothgroups,thesepreferencesdonotseemtobetheresultoftechnology-relatedissues.Instead,itappearsthatfactorsotherthanthoserelatedtothetechnologyitselfimpactoverallsatisfactionlevelsandteaching/learningpreferences.Thisisimportanttothosewho
