ShouldEconomicEducationBeLefttothePublicSchools?TheYouthEnterpriseAcademiesforUrbanYouthMarkC.SchugEricHagedornTracyJ.PosnanskiUniversityofWisconsinBMilwaukeeEconomiceducationislessfrequentlyofferedinlargeurbanhighschoolsthanitisinthesuburbsormedium-sizedcities(Walstad,2001).Thisisnotsurprising.Wesuspectthatconcernsaboutsuchissuesaslowacademicachievementandlowschoolcompletionrateswouldoftenovershadowtheimportanceofeconomicandfinancialeducation.Nonetheless,thereisgrowingevidenceofproblemsresultingfrompooreconomicandfinancialeducationincluding:$Alargenetworthgapbetweenwhites($94,900in1998asmeasuredin1998dollars)andnonwhites($16,400in1998asmeasuredin1998dollars)(FederalReserveSystem,2000).$Alargenumber(10million)ofunbankedhouseholdsintheUnitedStatesmostofwhich(57percent)areminorityhouseholds(Toussaint-Comeau&Rhine,2000).$A51percentincreaseinbankruptcyratesamongtheyoungfrom1991to1999(UnitedStatesGeneralAccountingOffice,2001).Whatexplainstheseproblems?Wesuspectthatlackofeconomicandfinancialeducationisamongthemostimportantvariables.Wesuggestthatwecannolongerwaitforpublicschoolstoactwithoutcompetitioninthisarea.Instead,collegesanduniversitiesalongwithcommunitypartnersshouldconsiderofferingeffectiveeconomicand
