AnAssessmentofYouthEntrepreneurshipProgramsintheUnitedStatesTeresaA.DanielCalvinA.KentMarshallUniversityAstrongentrepreneurshipeducationpresenceisanecessarykeytotheaccelerationofventureinitiationintheUnitedStates.Youthentrepreneurshipprogramsareproliferatingacrossthecountry,throughschools,communitygroups,youthgroupsandprivateenterprises.Thispaperprovidesasynopsisofthecurrentstatusoftheprincipalorganizationsinvolvedinyouthentrepreneurshipeducation,aswellasthekeyprogramscurrentlyofferedfortheK-12youthmarket.Throughananalysisoftheliteratureandavailabledata,theauthorsseektoanswerthequestion:Whoisdoingwhatinthegrowingfieldofyouthentrepreneurshipeducationandwhattypesofprogramsareavailable?Anothergoalistoassesswhethertheprogramsareworking(e.g.,aretheyactuallyincreasingthelevelofentrepreneurialandnewbusinessactivitybythosewhoparticipateinthem).Finally,thepaperwilloffersomesuggestionsforimprovingtheassessmentoftheseprograms.Morethan11.3percentofadultsintheUnitedStateswereengagedinentrepreneurialactivityin2003,representinganincreasefrom10.5percentrecordedin2002(GEMMonitor,2003).Thissamereportindicatedthatasmanyas300millionpeoplearoundtheglobeweretryingtolaunchnewfirmsin2003.TheGEMMonitorreportalsocontendsthatthesesignificantnumbersindicatethatentrepreneurshipisawidespreadphenomenonthatsparksinnovation,createsjobs,andcontributestomoreprosperousnationaleconomies.Withroughly54millionstudentscurrentlyenrolledinKB12classroomsacrosstheUnitedStates(NationalCenterforEducationStatistics,2002),thisstudentgrouprepresentsasignificantpotentialmarketforentrepreneurshipeducationandislikelytobepartoffuturestatisticsaboutnewventuredevelopment.Thissamegroupalsoappearstohaveakeeninterestinlearningaboutnewbusinessdevelopment.
