JournalofPrthateEnterprise,VolumeXXI,Fall2005ChangesinStudentAttitudestowardtheMarketSystemandtheIntroductoryMicroeconomicsCourseCharlesH.BreedenandNoreenLephardtMarquetteUniversityTherearenumerousresearchfindingssupportingthepropositionthatculturalvaluesandattitudesareassociatedwiththeeconomicprosperityofacountry(Harrison,1992;Sowell,1994;Lal,1998).Thesefindingssuggestapossibleimportantroleforvaluesandattitudesintheteachingandlearningofeconomics.Traditionally,however,valuesandattitudesarescarcelyacknowledgedineconomicsinstructionattheintroductoryorintermediatelevel.Theeconomicparadigmpresentedinclassisbasedon"positiveeconomics"andweseeourrolesaseducatorsaspromotingdevelopmentofcognitiveandobjectiveunderstandingoftheworkingsofthemarketprimarilybasedonneo-classicalassumptions,tenetsandmodels.Theinfluenceofvalues,attitudesandbeliefsisoftenrelegatedtoothersocialsciences.Becker(1983)wasoneofthefirstresearchersineconomiceducationtopointoutthattherewasaneedtoexplorethe"affectivedomain"ofeconomics.Subsequentresearchreporteddevelopmentofseveralinstrumentstoassesstheimpactofattitudes(SoperandWalstad,1983;O'BrienandIngles,1987;BreedenandLephardt,1993,2005).Otherresearchfocusedontheassessmentofattitudesbasedoncontentspecificcasesofeconomicbehaviorsuchaspricing(SeligmanandSchwartz,1997),changeofattitudesastheresultoftakinganeconomicscourse(Whaples,1995),andthedifferencesinattitudesbetweendemographicsubgroups,changesinattitudesofprinciplesclassesovertimeandtheimpactofpro-marketattitudesongradesinprinciplesofeconomics(BreedenandLephardt,2002).AlthoughtheprincipalgoaloftheIntroductoryCharlesH.BreedenandNoreenLephardt164
