JournalofPrivateEnteiprise,VolumeXXI,Fall2005TheMoralAffirmationofLibertyandtheFreeMarket:AnEconomicPersonalistApproachPaulA.ClevelandBirmingham-SouthernCollegeTheJudeo-ChristianUnderstandingofLibertyandPersonalResponsibilityWesterncivilization,especiallyasitdevelopedinAnglo-Saxoncommunities,wasrootedinaJudeo-Christiantradition.AsChristianitywaspracticedinthesecommunities,theBiblewasunderstoodasbeingGod'sWord.Assuch,itprovidedinstructionsonhoweachindividualpersonwastomanagetheaffairsofhislife.IntheOldTestament,thereareextensiveinstructionsonhowsomeoneshouldlive.Forexample,thebookofProverbsisintendedtoprovideanyyoungpersonwiththewisdomneededtomakegooddecisionsinlife.ThesamethemeiscarriedoverintheNewTestament,whichrepeatedlyinstructsthereadertopracticeself-discipline.Forexample,inhissecondlettertothechurch,theApostlePeteradmonishedhisreadersto"addtoyourfaithvirtue,tovirtueknowledge,toknowledgeself-control,toself-controlperseverance,toperseverancegodliness,togodlinessbrotherlykindness,tobrotherlykindnesslove."'Theprogressionhemadeintheseversesassumesthatapersonactsofhisownaccordand,thus,heisself-determined.Thatis,theindividualpersonisfreetochoose,butisresponsibleforthechoiceshemakes.Indeed,thispatternofChristiananthropologyoverarchestheentiretyoftheScriptures.Onthisbasis,Christianscholarshaveadvancedvarioustheoriesaboutsocialrelationshipsandthe'IIPeter1:5-6,NewKingJames(NKJ).PaulA.Cleveland92
