JournalofPrivateEnterprise,VolumeXXIII,Number1,Fall2007CanYouHearMeinTheBack?ImprovingLargeSectionInstructionUsingWalkie-TalkiesRussellS.SobelWestVirginiaUniversityJoshuaC.HallWestVirginiaUniversityInthefallof1995,oneofusintroducedanewtechnologythatfundamentallychangedthenatureoflargelectureclasses:walkietalkies.1Thisbriefeducationalnotedescribestheinspirationbehindthewalkie-talkiesystem,howitworks,andthecostsandbenefitsofusingthesystemtoteachlargeprinciplessections.Theideaforthewalkie-talkiesystemresultedfromgivingmyteachingassistanttheopportunitytoteachalarge(200student)classtohelphimgainexperienceteaching.Sittinginthebackoftheclassroomtoobservetheteachingassistantprovidedanentirelydifferentperspectiveonlargeclasses!Thestudentsaroundmewereveryinterestedinwhattheassistantwasteaching,andtheyconstantlyturnedaroundtoaskmequestions.Thisexperienceshatteredallofmypreconceptionsaboutstudentsinthebackoftheroom.Theywerenotpoorstudents,andtheywerenottryingtohidefromme.Thesestudentswantedtoaskquestionsoftheprofessorbutwereapparentlyafraidtoshoutthemoutinclass.AtthatmomentIdecidedthatmyclasswasnotlivinguptoitsfullpotentialbecauseofthelackofparticipationfromthestudentsintheback,especiallysincemore'Whileco-authored,thisarticleusesIinsteadofwe,sincethemajorityofitinvolvestherecollectionsandreflectionsofRussellSobel.RussellS.SobelandJoshuaC.Hall159
