JournalofPrivateEnterprise,VolumeXXIII,Number1,Fall2007AttitudesTowardFreeMarketsandInterestinPro-MarketOrganizations:EvidencefromStudentsInFreeEnterpriseAmandaS.KingGeorgiaSouthernUniversityJohnT.KingGeorgiaSouthernUniversityItisnotsurprisingthatstudentswhostudyfreemarketstendtohaveapositiveattitudeaboutfreemarkets.Forexample,BreedenandLephardt(2002)findthatthehigherthelevelofeconomicscoursethesurveyedstudentisenrolledin,themorepro-marketthestudentis.Whattheydonotshow,however,isifthesestudentsareinhigherleveleconomicscoursesbecauseoftheirbeliefsoriftheyhavethesebeliefsbecausetheyareinhigherleveleconomicscourses.Inthisnote,weexplorethisquestionbyexaminingwhetherstudentsexhibitinganextracurricularinterestinfreemarketswithouthavingnecessarilystudiedeconomicsorbusinesstendtobepro-market.Surprisingly,wefindthatstudentswhoexpressaninterestinjoiningStudentsInFreeEnterprise(SIFE)areactuallysignificantlylesspro-marketthantheirpeers.Beyondthisfinding,ourcharacterizationofthestudentinterestedinSIFErelayedinthisnoteshouldbeusefultoanyonerecruitingforabusiness-relatedstudentorganization.SIFEisanon-profitorganizationwithteamsoncollegeanduniversitycampusesaroundtheworld.Itsmissionisto"providecollegeanduniversitystudentsthebestopportunitytomakeadifferenceandtodevelopleadership,teamworkandcommunicationskillsthroughlearning,practicingandteachingtheprinciplesofFREEENTERPRISE"(SIFEUSA,12).Asthenameimplies,SIFEisAmandaS.KingandJohnT.King167
