JournalofPrivateEnterprise,VolumeXXIII,Number1,Fall2007TheConceptofEqualityinNobelLaureateA.K.Sen'sWork:ACriticalAssessmentShyamJ.KamathlSaintMary'sCollegeofCaliforniaAbstractThisarticleanalyzesthetheoreticalfoundationsofNobelLaureateA.K.Sen'sconceptofequalityasreflectedinhisworkinmanyareasofeconomicsandsocialthought.Thefundamentalapproachof"functionings"and"capabilities"thathasbeenthehallmarkofSen'sapproachtoequalityisfirstpresentedandthecommonbasesidentified.Thebasicconceptusedisthenanalyzedfromalogicalandempiricalperspective.Theadequacyofthisapproachisthenscrutinizedbycontrastingalternativeapproachesofend-stateandpvcessnotionsofequality.Acomprehensivecritiqueisdeveloped,andthemajorshortcomingsofSen'sconceptofequalityaredetailed.Sen'sconceptionofequalityisfoundtobeinadequateonlogicalandmethodologicalgrounds.Hence,itissuggestedthatthisapproachmaybeaninappropriateguideforeconomicpolicyandsocialinterventiontofacilitatehumandevelopment.TheauthorwouldliketothankJamesAhiakpor,CharlesBaird,GregoryChristainsenandSteveShmanskefortheircommentsonanearlierversionofthispaperpresentedattheWednesdayEconomicsResearchSeminaratCaliforniaStateUniversity,EastBay.JeffreyFriedmanofHarvardUniversityandSudhaShenoyoftheUniversityofNewcastleprovidedvaluablecommentsonanearlierversionofthispaper.ChiYanandDeepaIyerprovidedresearchassistance.Allerrorsandomissionsarethesoleresponsibilityoftheauthor.ShyamJ.Kamath116
