TheJournalofPrivateEnterprise28(1),2012,113–118IncorporatingEconTalkPodcastsintothePrinciplesClassroomJoshuaC.HallBeloitCollegeAbstractThisshorteducationalnotedescribeshowtoincorporateEconTalkpodcastsintoaprinciplescourse.Alistofspecificpodcastsisincluded,alongwiththeapplicablechaptersfromEconomics:PrivateandPublicChoicebyGwartney,Stroup,Sobel,andMacpherson.JELCodes:A1,A22Keywords:Podcast;EconTalk;Chalk-and-talkI.IntroductionBeckerandWatts(2001)findthateconomistsheavilyrelyontheso-called“chalk-and-talk”approachtolecturing.Becker(2000)andothershaveadvocatedgoingbeyondjustlecturingtoincorporatemoreexperimentsandotherhands-onactivitiesintheclassroominordertoincreasestudentengagement.Thishasledalargenumberofteacher-scholarstoadvocateforvisualmediasuchasmovies(Mateer,2004;MateerandStephenson,2011),comicstrips(Lawson,2006),videoclips(Diamond,2009),andtelevisionshows(Hall,2005;Holian,2011)tobeusedintheclassroom.Thisliteraturearguesthatmovingawayfromthepurelecturemodelofclassroominstructionhasbenefitsfortheclassroomenvironmentandstudentlearning.ForrecentPhDsinterestedinteachingataliberalartscollege,however,movingawayfromchalkandtalkhastheadditionalbenefitofmovingclosertothe“guideontheside”teachingstyle,whichtendstobethedominantteachingstyleonmostliberalartscampuses.Liberalartscollegesvalueexperimentationintheclassroomandeschewdogmatisminpedagogy,sotakingtheopportunitytobroadenone’sskillsetbyintegratingmoreactivelearningintotheclassroommightbenefityoungeconomistsdesiringtoworkinthatenvironment.InthisshorteducationalnoteIexplainhowIusedtheeconomicspodcast113
