JournalofPrivateEnterprise,SpecialEdition,VolumeXXII,Number2,Spring2007ClassicalLiberalismandFreedomofthePressLeonardP.LiggioGeorgeMasonUniversityHistoriesoftheClassicalLiberaltraditionbeginwiththeStoicphilosophersoftheGreco-Romanworld.GreekpoliticalphilosophyofPlatoandAristotlefocusedonthepolisorGreekcity-statewithitssmallandhomogeneouspopulation.ThisworldendedwithAlexandertheGreaesconquestofthePersianEmpire.Withhisearlydeath,hisgeneralswhowerehissuccessorsfromEgyptandGreecetotheIndusRiverestablishedseveralempireswithlargenewcitiesofmanypopulationsbutwithcommercialGreekasthecommonlanguage.Thepoliswasreplacedbythecosmospolis-theworldcity,orthewholeworldasasinglecountry,cosmopolitan.TheStoicphilosopherstooktheworldcityastheirstartingpoint,thatis,aworldwithoutdistinctionsoffamilyorigins.CivilizedpeoplespokeGreek,butnon-Greekspeakerswereequallypartofmankind.AlthoughpeoplemightspeakGreektheycamefromdifferentcountrieswithdifferentlegalsystems.TheRomans,whowereveryconservativeabouttreasuringtheirarchaiclegalsystem,realizedthatallthemerchantswhocametoRomehadbettercommercialconcepts.TheRomanRepublicsetupaseparatejudgeshipfortheforeignmerchantswhichdrewonallthedifferentcommerciallegalconceptstoformulatethemostefficientandproductivelawmerchant.TheRomansgeneralizedfromthisandfeltthatwhatwascommontovariouslawsystemsindicatedacommonsourceoflaw-anaturallaw.Cicero'slegalwritingsrepresentedthisStoicphilosophyofnaturallaw.ThiswasadoptedbytheChristianphilosophersmakingitthecenterofWesternEuropeanthought,andthefoundationforClassicalLiberalism.F.A.Hayek,1974NobelLaureateinEconomics,isconsideredtheleadingclassicalliberalthinkerofthe20thcentury.HisapproachLeonardP.Liggio191
