TheJournalofPrivateEnterprise23(2),2008,157-166TeachingPrivateEnterpriseThroughTunes:AnAbecedariumofMusicforEconomistsJoshuaC.HallBeloitCollegeRobertA.LawsonCapitalUniversityG.DirkMateerPennStateUniversityAndrewRicePennStateUniversityAbstractOverthepastdecade,anumberofnon-traditionalapproacheshaveemergedforteachingintroductoryeconomicsbeyondchalkandtalklectures.Thisnotehighlightstwomusic-relatedwebsitesforeconomiceducators.Thefirstusesanimationstopresentmusicinclass.Thesecondtakessonglyricsandformulatesaseriesofeconomicquestionsthatcanserveasusefulexercises.Theresultingsynergiescreateanewmediumforcommunicatingmarketprocesses.TeachingeconomicsthroughmusicisanextensionoftheworkdonebyWilliamBecker(2004)andBeckerandMichaelWatts(1998,2001,2003,2006),whoexaminedthewaythateconomicswastaughtatthecollegelevelandfoundthatthedisciplinehadbeenslowtoadoptinnovativeapproachestoteaching.Verylittlehasbeenwrittenabouttherelationshipbetweeneconomicsandmusic.FrankTinariandKailashKhandke(2000)madeuseofpopularsongsdatingbacktothe1930stohelpteacheconomics.Morerecently,G.DirkMateer(2004,2006)andJoshuaHall,RobertLawson,andMateer(forthcoming)haveexpandedthesetofsongsrelatedtoeconomicsbyreferencingnewermusic.157
